In appearance, it is a special houseplant: it looks as if its heart-shaped leaves have been strung on a long cord in pairs. Its English name also refers to its unique appearance. Its fleshy, stiff leaves are white in colour, with a marble pattern. You can support the tendrils as they climb, or you can let them hang; they may grow up to even 2 metres long.

Light:

Give it a bright spot, out of direct sunlight. In too much shade, the plant may stretch its stems and its leaves may fade.

Medium

Wait between waterings until the soil gets completely dry. It is sensitive to stagnant water; excessive moisture can cause its tuber to rot.

Extras

You can propagate using with the tubers appearing on the stems by laying them on a moist medium until they take root.

Fun facts

It is native to the territories of South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Thanks to its cultivation, a variety of the plant with variegated foliage (‘Variegata’) is now also available. Its tubers effectively store water, so provide it with well-draining soil.
