As a houseplant, it commands attention with its sturdy, dark green leaves. It is easy to care for, doesn’t need much experience, and copes well with both a home or an office environment. You can give it a shape by pruning, and it is easy to propagate from cut terminal shoots.

Give it a bright, partially shaded spot. Keep it out of strong sunlight, as the leaves can easily get scorched.

Medium

It thrives best in a warm, moist, humid environment, but can also readily tolerate shorter periods of drought.

Grown indoors, it can grow up to 2 metres tall.

Fun facts

Its Hungarian name (“tree strangling devil fig”) refers to its slightly aggressive behaviour, and most likely stems from the observation that, in its natural habitat, it lives on larger trees from which, however, it does not take nutrients, only uses them for support. This plant is a so-called epiphyte, so it does not “strangle” trees in any sense.
