It is a fast growing, eye-catching houseplant. It got its name from its zigzag, herringbone-like leaves. The leaves are fleshy with completely smooth surfaces, but have thorny parts in the corners.

It can be found in areas of Mexico’s evergreen forests as an epiphytic (tree-dwelling) plant, especially in the areas of Guerrero, Jalisco and Oaxaca. Its fragrant flowers, mostly in shades of white or pale yellow, appear during winter.
